首届奥斯卡金像奖于1929年举行，当时颁发的奖项是表彰1927年至1928年间的电影作品。默片《翼》成为了第一部获得最佳影片的电影。

奥斯卡最佳影片奖是由美国电影艺术与科学学院的全体会员通过多轮投票评选产生的。值得注意的是，从第82届（2010年）开始，提名最佳影片的数量从5部增加到了最多10部，这让更多不同类型的优秀电影有了展示的机会。
